Cowboy in Training!
Meet the fearless Desmond but I call him Desmond Tutu. He's in first grade and of course doesn't have a clue as to who Desmond Tutu is but when he's older I believe he'll appreciate the nickname. Last night I helped him do his homework - did you know first graders have to know fractions? What next kinder calculus? He had at least an hour of homework - which I thought was a little much so after the sentence writing meltdown we stopped and played hide and seek!

It is crazy what they are teaching now in school! Savannah is in Kindergarten this year and it has blown me away at what they have to be able to do! I remember going to K for half a day. Before they can graduate K here they have to be able to write there name correctly, have started reading, adding, numbers, etc. I don't remember starting any of that till at least 1st grade! He is a cutie!
They start them pretty early with the homework now...and lots of it too!
That was nice of you to give him a fun little break when he had the meltdown. As a teacher, I am well-aware of the expectations in education these days. I think when I was young, kids learned to read in 1st grade. Now, if you aren't reading by the end of Kindergarten, you are considered behind. Desmond looks like a natural up there!
You are so right about the "too much" homework for these little guys.
Desmond Tutu looks pretty happy on that horse though. Cute, cute, cute.
I have already decided I will need to get my kids a tutor for math. I am at a loss! I can add and subtract and balance my checkbook! I can also measure(for cooking)I feel for my kids! Glad I am out of school!!
